Introduction
GKCA is a Christian school built entirely on the basis of Christian Biblical values intended to develop a child holistically. This means that while a child attends GKCA three areas of developments are quite critical. GKCA intends to develop your child academically, spiritually, and physically. This to GKCA leads to producing morally upright citizens.
School Founders
George Kendagor Christian Academy, as the name suggest, if founded on a vision of a Rev. George Kendagor and his wife, Mama Elizabeth. In 1954 Rev. George Kendagor and his wife mama Elizabeth, together with their four young children made a brave decision to move to West Pokot; one of the then dark parts of Kenya. Their only mission was to preach the gospel of salvation through Jesus Christ. They settled in Koitumo. As soon as they had been given the right of ownership of the property in Koitumo, Kapenguria, they made it to be the base of their ministry. George and Elizabeth traversed the dark district preaching the gospel and establishing churches. They also perfected their mission by helping to establish many schools in the district where many young children could find education. After many years of service and their strength began to decline due to their age, they re-emphasized the need to make Koitumo a center where many would come to be nourished and encouraged I their walk with the lord, using their favorite passage from Isaiah 25:6. This therefore led to the start of George Kendagor Christian Academy along-side Bible Faith Church and Faith Bible College of Africa. This school therefore is as an honor and appreciation for their sacrifice. It is also the continuation of their vision cast in 1954. Their vision was holistic in nature and this school serve as propagation of the same.
Brief History
George Kendagor Christian Academy in Koitumo can be said to be a reward to Rev. George Kendagor who selflessly ventured out without any direct support from anywhere with a determination to change the lives of many in West Pokot and beyond. Dr. Benjamin Kipkorir in his book Descend From Cherang’any Hills “Memoirs of a Reluctant Academic” (one that is good to read) describes Rev. George Kendagor as “one of those individuals with the power to single-handedly re-shape a destiny.” (64). Indeed, after traversing many parts of Kenya and mainly West Pokot, preaching the gospel and starting many schools, Kendagor got caught up with age and he could no longer go out to witness how God had transformed his selfless determination into an abundant harvest. Then God who likes to amaze us with His grace chose to bring the harvest of him ministry right to George and Elizabeth’s doorsteps for them to see.
In 2005 when it was clear that God was calling us to return back in Kenya from America, Jane and I knew that it was going to an adventurous trip with all the uncertainties that come with uprooting a family. We knew that we would be involved in teaching in the Bible school in Koitumo we were to start shortly after settling down, and we also knew that we would be involved in preaching and teaching in different churches. But then, we had come back from St. Louis with our three children and soon they would need to go school. In 2005 George Kendagor Christian Academy started as a home school for our children but it quickly became a class of 10 children schooling with our children. At the end of 2005 it was clear to us that God was leading us to starting an academy. GKCA was thus officially started in 2006 and provisionally registered by the government in 2007. The school was finally formally and fully registered in 2011 and issued with certificate of operation.
PURPOSE OF GKCA
GKCA is founded in Christian principle of “train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6). Our desire has always been to interlace academic with Christianity in the fabric of the lives of our young people. We therefore came up with the motto “Excellence in Holistic development” which comes from the idea of helping a child to develop Academically, Spiritually, and Physically. Of course, as we have had to learn later on that this is easy said than done, we will nonetheless, always strive towards these goals and no matter how hard it sometimes gets, it is always been a journey of adventure.
GROWTH
We have since seen GKCA grow rapidly and it has at times overtaken us in our ability to keep up with the demands and expectations. Nonetheless, God has also used it to teach us to better understand what is meant by the phrase “Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit, saith the Lord of hosts.” (Zechariah 4:6).
In 2012 we graduated 27 children who joined different high schools after staying with us for 7years. In 2013 we graduated 32 pupils, 2014 graduated 18 pupils, 2015 graduated 26 pupils, and 2016 we graduated 19 pupils. All these children left GKCA professing Jesus Christ as their personal savior. In the recent KCSE (High School Examination) we were very happy to learn that the top student in West Pokot County came from our school.
